The M109 is an American self-propelled howitzer of 155 millimeters caliber, which from the 1960s became the most widespread tracked artillery vehicle of western armies. The early machines carried the M126 howitzer with a short barrel twenty-three calibers long, ending in a muzzle brake and supplemented with a fume extractor, which after a shot draws the gases out of the barrel instead of into the fighting compartment. It is precisely by the short barrel that an early M109 is recognized at first sight: the later versions beginning with the M109A1 received the markedly longer M185 barrel, and the silhouette of the vehicle changed with it.
The set brings the M126 barrel in 1:35 scale as a replacement for the part from the kit. It pays off on a model of the early version of the M109 and everywhere the shape of the barrel from the kit is not enough for you, or where the lengthwise joint could not be leveled imperceptibly on the part.
Before gluing, try the part dry and check how it follows on from the jacket of the barrel and from the shield. Cut the surplus material off with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the remainder down. Before painting, wash and degrease the part and choose the glue according to its material; for parts that are not of polystyrene, super glue has proved itself. Glue the barrel only once you have decided on its elevation, and when painting remember that gases settled quickly at the muzzle and on the muzzle brake. A thin coat of a dark shade running back from the muzzle will do more than soiling the whole surface.
For modelers who build the M109 in 1:35 scale and want to have the barrel as accurate as possible. Paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
