This injection-molded plastic kit from the Italian manufacturer Italeri captures the American M1A1 Abrams main battle tank reduced to 1:35. It is the most widespread scale for military hardware, so accessories, metal barrels, photo-etched parts and figures can all be obtained for the model without trouble. Check the contents of the box, the number of parts and the choice of markings against the details on the packaging.
The M1 Abrams is an American main battle tank with a gas turbine instead of a conventional diesel engine and with layered armor. The M1A1 version differs from the original mainly in its 120 mm smoothbore gun, which replaced the older weapon of smaller caliber. Characteristic features are the low angular outline of the turret with its markedly sloped front and the sizeable stowage baskets at the rear of the turret. The type is in service in a number of armies and has become one of the most frequently built models of modern hardware.
Work from the running gear, try the wheels and the tracks dry and keep an eye on the hull not being twisted. Leave the turret removable until you have finished painting; access to the lower part of the hull is then easier. The angular surfaces call for careful filling and sanding of the joints. Apply primer before painting, spray the base shade with an airbrush and lighten the center of large areas, so that the model does not look flat. Keep the patina moderate: a dark wash into the engraved lines, a fine dry brush on the edges and pigments only on the lower part of the hull and on the running gear.
