An injection-molded plastic kit of one of the largest artillery systems that can be built in 1:35 scale. The M65, nicknamed Atomic Annie, was a transport and firing combination: the gun itself with its massive carriage and lifting gear, completed by a transport arrangement that allowed it to be moved by road. The model is therefore long, demanding on space in a display case and correspondingly demanding to plan, but it belongs among the centerpieces of any artillery collection.
The M65 was built as a heavy 280 mm artillery system of the early Cold War. Characteristic are the very long barrel, the robust carriage with its lifting and supporting gear and the transport arrangement in which the whole was slung between a pair of tractors. For firing, the gun was lowered and rested on the ground, because the recoil far exceeded what an ordinary chassis structure could take.
Do not hurry this build and divide it into separate units: the barrel with its cradle, the carriage with the lifting gear, and the running gear. The long barrel has to be straight and without a visible seam, so sand and polish it before assembly and keep checking by sighting along its length. Fit the running and supporting parts dry, so that the model stands stably once finished. In color it is a single-color matte finish that needs modulation: lighten the upper faces, run a dark wash into the recesses and around the rivets, apply fine wear to the edges and dust the underside with pigments. Given the size, it pays to prepare a base that will carry the model and at the same time give it context.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
