The wheels of the five-ton military MAN with the Michelin XZL off-road design. This tread pattern belongs among the most widespread military tires of all and it is told from a road design at a distance by its deep oblique blocks. The set replaces the wheels on a model under construction, and the vehicle itself is the content of another box.
The five-ton MAN served as a universal carrier: it carried troops, pallets, tanks and workshop containers and it accompanied units off paved roads. That is exactly why off-road tires appear on it so often, because a deep design clears itself of mud and keeps the vehicle on soft going. Machines of this type were seen in the Balkans, in Africa and on missions in Central Asia. The vehicles seldom came back clean at that, so a shod wheel tends to be the dirtiest part of the whole vehicle in photographs.
Deep blocks call for a different procedure than smooth tires. Lay the base down in dark gray, let brownish dust into the hollows and lighten the edges of the blocks with a dry brush, so that the relief comes out. If you place the model on a base with ruts, carry the color of the terrain onto the lower part of the wheels as well; the transition between the vehicle and the base then comes across naturally.
