An accessory set of an antenna base of the AS1729 type for modern military vehicles of the American army. The antenna is one of the few parts where the advantage of a replacement part is apparent at once, even in a photograph of a finished model. An injection-molded plastic rod has to be considerably thicker than the scale would allow because of the mold, it bends under its own weight and it carries a parting line along its whole length that cannot be sanded away without thinning it further and breaking it. A precise replacement part is slender, straight and holds up. The set is not a model of the vehicle: it assumes you already have the kit.
The AS1729 is a vehicle antenna base for radio sets working in the very high frequency band. It consists of a flexible foot, which protects the antenna while driving over rough ground and when catching on an obstacle, and a rod fitted from above. On American vehicles the base appears across types, from light off-road cars through armored personnel carriers to trucks, and it is usually mounted on the rear part of the body or on a fender. Because the antenna overhangs the outline of the vehicle, it markedly determines its silhouette.
Sets of this kind tend to be turned from metal, or they combine a metal rod with a cast foot. Degrease metal parts before gluing and roughen the contact surface slightly; they are glued with cyanoacrylate glue. If the set contains resin sections, wash them in lukewarm soapy water to remove mold release from the mold, cut the casting blocks off with a fine saw and level the surface with abrasive paper used wet and with protection for your airways, because resin dust must not be breathed in. Apply a primer suitable for smooth surfaces before painting. Spray the rod thinly in matte black or dark green, because a heavy coat of paint would take away exactly the slenderness the set is bought for.
