An injection-molded plastic kit of the Soviet mobile surveillance radar P-40/1S12, known under the code designation Long Track, in 1:35 scale from the manufacturer Trumpeter. It is radar hardware on a tracked chassis, that is a subject that appears only rarely among model releases and acts as a striking centerpiece in a display case and in a diorama alike. The particular number of parts, the presence of photo-etched parts and the range of decal schemes are stated in the instructions enclosed with the package.
The 1S12 radar served to search for air targets and to pass data to surface-to-air missile systems, so that they had a timely picture of the situation in the air. The sizeable rotating antenna was carried on the body of a tracked chassis derived from a heavy artillery tractor, so the set could move off paved roads as well and change position quickly. The designation Long Track comes from the system of code names used in the West, while the Soviet designation was P-40.
It is sensible to finish and paint the running gear and the chassis before the body is closed up, because once glued a brush will hardly get at them. The antenna forms the largest continuous area of the whole model, so it pays to look it over against the light, fill any sinks and sand the surface before the base coat is sprayed. The tracks are assembled and painted separately from the hull. An airbrush suits the large uniform areas, with a slight lightening of the base shade toward the center of the panels preventing a flat look. A gloss coat under the decals follows, then a wash into the engraved lines and a matte coat. Dust and mud on the running gear are tuned with pigments.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
