About product

PzKpfw II Ausf. a to F 1:35: metal cannon and machine gun barrels

A metal set from Master for building a model of the PzKpfw II light tank in 1:35 scale. It is not a model of the vehicle but a pair of turned barrels that replace the plastic parts of the main weapon and the coaxial machine gun. The barrels are intended for PzKpfw II kits from IBG, Dragon and other manufacturers.

Why it pays to change both weapons at once

In the turret of the PzKpfw II two barrels sit close beside each other. That is exactly why it shows most here when one of them is not on axis or when the spacing between them drifts: the eye catches a difference like that sooner than any other detail on the model. Turned parts are straight and have a regular circular cross section, so once they are set into drilled holes both barrels hold the same direction. The automatic cannon also has a very slender barrel, which plastic manages only with difficulty at that diameter: it tends to be bent straight off the sprue and flattens when the seam is removed.

The real subject

The PzKpfw II was a German light tank of the 1930s. In its two-man turret it carried the 2 cm KwK 30 automatic cannon, 55 calibers long and derived from an anti-aircraft weapon of the same caliber, plus a coaxial 7.92 mm machine gun. The Ausf. a to F marks make up the early and the main production series, which differed chiefly in the running gear and the thickness of the armor.

Fitting and painting

The plastic barrels are cut off at the mantlet, the surface is leveled and the holes are drilled out with a micro drill to suit the diameter of the shanks. It is worth setting both barrels in dry and checking them from the front of the turret, and only then fixing them with gel cyanoacrylate glue. Before painting, metal calls for degreasing and a primer meant for metal surfaces. The muzzles themselves look best without paint, simply polished and chemically blackened. When picking out the detail at the end, watch the slender cannon, so that it does not get bent on the edge of the display case.

Who the set is for

  • For builders of German light tanks in 1:35 scale
  • For modelers who are bothered by a bent plastic cannon barrel
  • For anyone who wants both weapons in the turret on axis and at the same spacing
  • For combining with photo-etched sets and interior accessories

This is an accessory for building the model, not a standalone kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

According to the name, the set holds barrels for the 2 cm KwK 30 cannon as well as the MG 34 machine gun. The exact number of pieces is not given.

The name gives the Ausf. a to F marks, that is, the early and the main production series of the PzKpfw II. Compare the diameters dry against the plastic parts before gluing.

Set them in dry, check by looking straight in from the front of the turret, and only then use gel cyanoacrylate glue, which gives you a moment to correct them.
