About product

Hobby Boss 1:35 Tiger II with the Henschel turret and a gun of 105 mm caliber

This kit in 1:35 scale represents the German Tiger II heavy tank with the production Henschel turret, but with a main armament of 105 mm caliber instead of the usual gun of 88 mm caliber. Rearming the Tiger II with a heavier gun never went beyond the project stage and no such vehicle reached production — so this is a variant that belongs among the so-called paper projects. Hobby Boss also makes the ordinary production versions of the Tiger II in the same scale, so you can choose whether you want a production or a project vehicle.

The real subject

The Tiger II was the heaviest German tank in series production in the Second World War, with markedly sloped frontal armor and two types of turret, of which the later and more numerous one is known as the Henschel. Production vehicles carried a long-barreled gun of 88 mm caliber. The proposed replacement by a gun of 105 mm caliber was meant to raise penetrating power, but it would have meant a heavier turret and a smaller ammunition stowage; it was never carried out. The designation Sd.Kfz. 182 corresponds to this type.

Building and painting tips

  • The running gear of the Tiger II is complex — assemble and paint it before you close the hull up and fit the fenders.
  • A longer and heavier barrel pulls the turret forward; check that the turret mount holds and that the barrel does not droop.
  • Shade the large flat surfaces of the hull, otherwise the model reads as flat even with the paint well sprayed on.
  • Build the weathering up in layers: a wash in the seams, a dry brush on the edges, pigments on the running gear and the lower hull.
  • On a project vehicle, choose the color scheme with restraint — there are few sources for its appearance, so it pays to stick to the instructions.

Who the model is for

  • For modelers who collect German vehicles and are interested in project variants.
  • For builders who already have a production Tiger II in the collection and want a less usual piece.
  • For more experienced modelers, because of the more extensive running gear.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A heavier gun was considered for the Tiger II, but no such vehicle was built in series. The model therefore represents a project variant, not a vehicle used in action.

The Henschel turret is the later and more numerous type, with a flat front, while the earlier type has a rounded front. The difference is obvious on a model at first glance.

Check the contents of the package and the number of parts on the box and in the instructions.

The running gear of the Tiger II is laborious and calls for care in fitting. For a first model of a vehicle we recommend a simpler vehicle.
