An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:35 scale from Trumpeter. It depicts the heavy eighteen-ton half-track tractor with the 8.8 cm Flak gun mounted on the load bed, that is the self-propelled version, not merely a towed gun. According to the manufacturer the package holds over 760 parts on sixteen sprues and is well equipped: a turned metal barrel, a photo-etched fret, individual track links, rubber tires for the front wheels and a sheet of decals. The manufacturer gives the assembled model a length of roughly 246 mm. It is a complex kit: the half-track running gear, the engine, the cab and the gun mount are all built as separate assemblies.
The eighteen-ton half-track tractor was the largest German half-track and was used mainly to tow heavy guns and to recover disabled tanks. A small series of these vehicles carried an 8.8 cm Flak gun directly on the load bed, with folding side panels that, once dropped, formed a working platform. The eighty-eight is a legend: it was designed as an anti-aircraft gun, but it turned out to be a devastating anti-tank weapon; with its high muzzle velocity it went through practically every Allied tank of its day at a range from which the tanks could not fire back. The self-propelled version gave the eighty-eight what it lacked most: the ability to open fire at once without the lengthy job of setting up the carriage.
The running gear first: torsion bar suspension, wheels and the individual track links, which are best assembled and painted separately and fitted only afterward. Finish the engine bay and the cab before you close them up. Degrease the metal barrel before bonding and coat it with a metal primer, or the paint will not hold. Bond the photo-etch with super glue and the plastic with thin solvent cement. You can choose either the gray finish of the early period or the later dark yellow with camouflage. On the large areas of the load bed chipping works well (paint worn away by the boots of the crew), the tracks and the fenders deserve dust and mud from pigments, and the barrel deserves smoke and soot shades at the muzzle.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
