A commander's cupola for the Sd.Kfz. 184 Elefant in 1:35 scale from PANZER ART. A standalone accessory for the roof of the fighting superstructure; a model of the vehicle is not in the package.
Responsibility details are not available.
An accessory from PANZER ART for builders of the Elefant heavy tank destroyer. It is not a kit of the vehicle but a single element: the commander's cupola, which is seated in the roof of the fighting superstructure. It is precisely by this that the reworked machines are told from their original form, so a small part changes the character of the whole model.
The tank destroyer was created from the chassis Porsche had built for an unsuccessful heavy tank project. It went into the fighting at Kursk in 1943 still under the name Ferdinand: a massive casemate superstructure, frontal armor of exceptional thickness and an 8.8 cm PaK 43/2 gun with a long barrel that dealt with every opponent of the day. Service showed, however, that the commander lacked a view out and the crew lacked a means of close defense. The rework at the turn of 1943 and 1944 therefore added a machine gun in the front plate and, over the commander's station, exactly this cupola with its ring of vision slots, taken from assault guns. Vehicles reworked this way were given the name Elefant and fought out most of their remaining service in Italy.
Seat the cupola dry first and only then, according to the result, rework the opening in the roof so that it sits level and without play. The vision slots are darkened by spot picking-out; the edges, by contrast, come out with a light dry brush. Because it is the highest point of the whole model, dust and scuffing from the crew's boots settle on it, and weathering here looks entirely natural.
