Why the sets are split by kit

The difference between individual treatments of the same vehicle does not lie in the quality of the parts alone. Every maker solves the axles, stubs and hub diameters in its own way, and an accessory wheel that seats perfectly on one model either hangs in the air on another or cannot be fitted at all. That is why the sets come in two renderings, and this one is prepared for the Hobby Boss kit.

In appearance the parts match the later series of the Sd.Kfz 222 armored car, that is the car which served with reconnaissance companies in the second half of the war. The rubber is worked with a pressed-down face, thanks to which the finished model rests on flat faces and loses that sense of floating which arises with kits whose wheels are perfectly round. The pattern carries the designation type 2 of the three designs listed.

One small thing that often gets forgotten helps the result too: it is good to fit the wheels only after the chassis has been painted, so the rubber can be set off against the metal rims. The spare wheel the name mentions was carried on the side of this type and in photographs tends to be dusted differently from the running wheels. That can be turned to good account when finishing.

The subject remains a vehicle whose unmistakable silhouette is made by sloped armor plates and an open turret with a mesh cover. That was to protect the crew from a grenade thrown from above and for a modeler it is the most striking element of the whole build. Well-fitting wheels underneath it round out the impression of a machine ready to set off on reconnaissance.
