The Sd.Kfz. 251 was the most widespread German half-track carrier of the Second World War. At the rear it rested on a tracked chassis with interleaved road wheels, at the front on a completely ordinary steerable axle on tires. The front pair was not powered and took care only of turning, and yet on a finished model it ends up exactly at the viewer's eye level and decides a great deal about how the whole machine comes across.
The castings take the place of the front wheels from the kits of the Border Models company. The tread design corresponds to the off-road pattern of Continental tires in the form that appears most often in period photographs. The rim is in the early shape, with a smooth transition to the disk. The gain over injected plastic lies mainly in the sharpness of the grooves and in the fact that the mold parting line in the middle of the tread, which would otherwise have to be laboriously sanded away, is absent.
The machine came into being from 1939 at the Hanomag factory in Hannover and lasted in production until the last weeks of the fighting. Four basic versions designated by the letters A to D followed one another in turn, and more than two dozen specialized modifications were added to them, from an ambulance through an engineer variant to a carrier for rocket launchers.
The wheel is separated from the casting block with a fine-toothed saw, and the cut surface is then leveled with a file or sandpaper. Before painting it is advisable to rinse the parts in lukewarm soapy water, so that the remains of the mold release agent disappear. Super glue or a two-part epoxy resin serves for joining; solvent cement for polystyrene has nothing to dissolve here.
The package contains the wheels alone; the rest of the carrier comes from the original kit.
