About product

A less usual off-road tread

German half-tracks did not run on one single type of tire. There were several suppliers, each stamped its own tread design, and over the course of the war the range changed still further according to what could just then be made from substitute synthetic rubber. Alongside the most widespread off-road pattern, therefore, a variant with a different arrangement of the transverse blocks also appears in photographs, one that was noticeably rarer.

It is this less frequent design that the castings capture. The rim stays in the early rendering, so the set suits vehicles from the earlier production series. The modeler gets a wheel with sharp edges to the grooves and with no trace of a parting line, which is the usual weakness of injected parts. The mounting is prepared for the kits of the Border Models company.

Where such a tire came from

The supply of rubber was among the permanently weak places in Germany. Natural rubber was lacking from the beginning of the war, a synthetic material from domestic production became the substitute, and its properties forced manufacturers to adjust the design and the composition of the compound. From there springs the variety of treads that we see in period photographs today.

Why reach for the rarer variant

At an exhibition and on the shelf it is useful when two otherwise identical vehicles differ in a detail that has support in a period photograph. The tires are just the simplest way to tell two Hanomags apart without having to intervene in the body.

Working with the material

The casting is released by a cut, the surface is leveled and the surface freed of grease. Super glue holds the joint; with larger seating areas epoxy does so more reliably. The rest of the vehicle the builder completes from the base kit.

FAQ

It is a tread design that occurred on German half-tracks more rarely than the main off-road pattern. You will find it in period photographs all the same.

The disk here corresponds to the older shape. For machines from the end of the war the rendering with the later pressed disk is more suitable.

A fine saw, a file and sandpaper will do. The casting requires nothing further.

A dark gray base instead of black proves itself, along with light drybrushing of the edges, which visually lifts the design.
