A less usual variant of the tread

The set brings front wheels for the Sd.Kfz. 6 with an off-road tread that the name itself marks as less usual. That shows in the result too: a model with such a pattern will stand apart from other builds of the same machine. It will be reached for mainly by someone who builds from a particular period photograph and wants the tread to match the picture.

Where it shows on the model

The steered wheels stand at the front of a half-track, outside the tracked chassis, and the viewer looks at them from the front and from the side. Nothing covers them, so the difference between a simplified part and a well worked out wheel is seen at once. The intervention in the build is small all the same: only two parts change and the rest of the model stays as the kit intends it.

Building and painting tips

• Wash and degrease the wheels before painting, as paint does not hold on an uncleaned surface.
• Cut the excess material away with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the remainder flat.
• A coarse off-road pattern deserves a dry brush: a lighter shade will bring out the edges of the tread blocks.
• Apply the paint in thin coats, so that the grooves do not get clogged.
• Before gluing, try fitting the wheels dry and check the wheel track and that they stand square.
• Super glue proves itself for joining them to the model, as the joint area is small.
