About product

Sikorsky HH-60H Rescue Hawk, 1:35

The Sikorsky HH-60H Rescue Hawk in 1:35 scale is a kit of the naval variant of the famous Black Hawk. A 1:35 scale is rather exceptional for helicopters — 1:48 or 1:72 is the usual choice — and it means that the finished model will be markedly larger and more detailed than an ordinary helicopter in the display case. At the same time it goes perfectly with figures and vehicles in 1:35, which makes it a rewarding subject for a diorama. Count on it needing the matching amount of shelf space.

The real subject

The HH-60H is a special variant of the Sikorsky H-60 family built for the US Navy. Its main task was combat search and rescue (CSAR) — picking up downed pilots and crews from hostile territory — and supporting naval special operations. The machine first flew at the end of the 1980s, entered service at the turn of the 1990s and proved itself in combat as early as Operation Desert Storm. For its dangerous role it was equipped both to defend itself and to attack: it carried machine guns in the side doors, it could be armed with air-to-ground rockets and it had an extensive self-protection system against guided missiles. It served aboard aircraft carriers until the middle of the 2010s, when newer machines took over the role. It is, in short, an armed rescuer — a helicopter that flew in where the others flew out.

Building and painting tips

On a helicopter most of the work happens inside the cabin — the cargo compartment is clearly visible through the large doors and windows, so take care over the interior, the seats, the belts and the instrument panel before you close the fuselage. Fit the clear parts only after painting and protect them with masking tape or masking fluid. The typical low-visibility gray naval schemes look flat — bring them to life with a discreet accent on the panel lines (a panel liner or a wash) and with restrained dust and exhaust staining around the engines. Leave the rotor blades until the end so that they do not get in the way of handling, and remember a gloss coat before the decals so that no silvering appears at the edges. Dry-fit the landing gear and the rotor head assembly — on a large helicopter they decide whether the model stands straight.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of modern military helicopters and US Navy equipment
  • Modelers who want a large showpiece for the display case
  • Builders of dioramas in 1:35 scale (figures and vehicles match)
  • Anyone interested in the subject of combat search and rescue (CSAR)
  • More experienced modelers — a large helicopter means a lot of interior and many clear parts

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It was a US Navy helicopter for combat search and rescue (CSAR) — it picked up downed pilots and crews from hostile territory — and for supporting naval special forces. That is why, unlike an ordinary rescue machine, it was armed and protected.

1:48 or 1:72 is more usual for helicopters, but 1:35 really is produced for this family of machines. The advantage is a large, detailed model that matches figures and vehicles in 1:35. The drawback is the space it takes in the display case.

Rather not. A large helicopter means an extensive interior that shows through the glazing, many clear parts and a more demanding rotor and landing gear assembly. It is best for modelers who already have a few builds behind them.

Please check the exact contents, including the number of parts and the marking options, against the information on the box. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted as standard, without glue and paints.
