This plastic kit from Trumpeter captures the upgraded postwar form of the BM-13 multiple rocket launcher, listed under the service index 2B7R. The launcher is mounted on a three-axle cargo truck, so the model combines building a truck with building a more complex superstructure.
The BM-13 system was introduced during the Second World War and built on a simple principle: a frame with guide rails fires unguided rockets of 132 mm caliber in quick succession. A single rocket was not accurate, but a salvo from several vehicles covered a large area, which was used for area fire preparation. After the war the system stayed in service and was carried over onto newer truck chassis with better cross-country ability; the upgraded versions differ from the wartime ones above all in the chassis, the cab and the arrangement of the launch frame. It served in the armies of a number of countries for decades after the war ended.
Split the build into three units: the chassis with its frame and axles, the cab, and the launcher superstructure. The frame with its guide rails is the most sensitive part: glue the parts on a flat surface and keep checking that the rails stay parallel, otherwise any asymmetry will show on the finished model. Paint the tires separately before fitting them and set them apart with a flat dark gray shade, as pure black looks unnatural. After the base coat it suits to bring out the riveted joints with a wash, to add chipped paint on the edges of the cab and to apply dust and mud to the wheel wells and the lower part of the frame.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
