A detail set in 1:35 scale from PANZER ART for a plastic kit of the Soviet SU-85 tank destroyer. It holds a cast gun mantlet and a turned 85 mm D-5S barrel, which replace the matching plastic parts. It is not a vehicle kit — it is an accessory to a model you already own.
What the set solves
On casemate vehicles the barrel is the most prominent feature of the whole model, and every lengthwise seam or slight ovality shows on it at first glance. The turned part has no seam and is round along its whole length; the cast mantlet also tends to come with a truer casting surface than injection molding can give.
The SU-85 was a Soviet tank destroyer built on the chassis of the T-34 medium tank. The turret was replaced by a fixed casemate superstructure with an 85 mm D-5S gun in the front plate, the self-propelled version of the D-5 gun. The vehicle came about in answer to the need for an antitank weapon with higher penetrating power, and in production it was later succeeded by the SU-100 with a 100 mm gun. The round cast mantlet around the barrel is a characteristic identifying feature of the SU-85.
Try the parts dry first; on some kits the opening in the front plate of the superstructure may need slight work so that the mantlet sits without a gap. The barrel has to stay in the axis of the vehicle, so check it from above and from the front while the glue sets. Degrease the turned surface before painting and go over it with primer, otherwise the paint rubs off. Once painted, give the cast mantlet a dark wash and then pick it out lightly with a dry brush so that the roughness of the casting comes through. Darken the muzzle and add fine dust pigment around it.
The set is supplied unpainted, as an accessory to a plastic kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
