An injection-molded plastic kit of the T-55A tank in 1:35 scale from Tamiya. The kit builds on what Tamiya is known for - precise fit, a clean surface and clear instructions. The turret has the texture of the casting and the weld beads finely suggested, an optional installation of the DShKM anti-aircraft machine gun is available (with and without the weapon), a commander figure is enclosed and there are decals for five marking options - Soviet, Polish and Czechoslovak machines. Let us be honest about two things: the tracks are one-piece, soft (rubber) rather than individual links, and the mold has some years behind it - it dates from the turn of the millennium. Buildability is excellent as a result, but anyone who wants today's level of track detail will reach for a separate set of link tracks.
The T-55 is among the most-produced tanks in history - for the whole T-54 and T-55 family the figures run from tens of thousands to over a hundred thousand built, more than for any other tank. It served in the armies of several dozen countries, went through practically every conflict of the second half of the 20th century and can still be met in modified forms today. The T-55A version brought an anti-radiation interior liner and an anti-radiation cover for the commander's cupola. For Czech and Slovak modelers it matters that the T-55 and T-55A were also built under license in Czechoslovakia - at the works in Martin, from which a large part of the production went for export - and that they served with the Czechoslovak People's Army. This tank is therefore not foreign equipment: it is a machine that was built and driven at home.
A standard polystyrene build - liquid cement for plastic, cleaned-up parting lines. Assemble and align the running gear before you close the hull up. With a one-piece soft track take care: ordinary cement for plastic does not hold on it, so make the joint with super glue or with the pins supplied, and degrease the track before painting so that the primer holds on it. The base shade is Soviet tank green; spray with an airbrush, lighten the upper surfaces, apply the decals over a gloss clear coat and then matte the finish. Weathering: a dark wash in the welds and corners, dust and mud pigments on the track treads, the bottom of the hull and the fenders.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
