About product

Tiger I, the initial production series, 1:35, Border Model

An injection-molded plastic kit of the Tiger I heavy tank in 1:35 scale from the manufacturer Border Model. The box is listed as a 3in1 variant, that is with the option of building several different standards according to your own choice. Border Model is one of the newer brands that make their name with fine surface engraving and richly detailed moldings, so the model forms a good basis even for modelers who want to build without further accessories.

The real subject

The Tiger I, officially the Panzerkampfwagen VI Ausf. E, was a German heavy tank of the Second World War with an 88 mm gun and a heavily armored boxy hull. The initial production machines differed from the later series in a whole range of details: a differently designed commander's cupola, rubber-rimmed road wheels, a system for drawing in and filtering intake air with external canisters at the rear, side-mounted dischargers and the arrangement of the tools on the hull. It is exactly these elements that set the early series apart from the more commonly built middle and late standards and they are the main reason why the initial production Tiger is built as a subject of its own.

Building and painting tips

Plan the sequence according to the final variant before the first gluing, because with sets of the 3in1 kind the choice carries over into the parts of the hull, the turret and the equipment. Finish and paint the running gear and the internal details before you close the hull up, otherwise you will no longer reach them. Use liquid cement on the plastic, which is drawn into the joint by capillary action. Spray a primer before painting and only then the base shade. With heavy tanks the weathering is built up in layers: a dark wash in the recesses and around the rivets, then dust and mud pigments on the running gear and the lower parts of the hull, and finally a dry brush on the edges. Leave the tracks and the wheels somewhat different in color from the hull, otherwise the model merges into one surface.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers with experience of building military machines in 1:35
  • Those interested in the early standard of the Tiger I, which differs from the common late series
  • Builders of dioramas who will appreciate a choice of several standards
  • Collectors of German machines of the Second World War in a single scale

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It means that several different standards of the machine can be built from one box. Which one is decided according to the instructions before building, and only one variant can ever be built.

In details: the design of the commander's cupola, the rubber-rimmed road wheels, the system for filtering intake air with external canisters at the rear and the arrangement of the equipment on the hull.

Rather not. The model has complex running gear and a number of small parts, so it assumes at least basic experience of building machines in 1:35.
