An injection-molded plastic kit of the heavy V188 diesel locomotive in 1:35 scale from the Chinese maker Trumpeter. The 1:35 scale is unusual in the world of railroad models, but it matches the standard of military models exactly, so the locomotive can be combined with vehicles, figures and accessories of the same scale. In size the finished model is among the most striking pieces you can put on a shelf.
The V188 was a heavy diesel locomotive made up of two permanently coupled halves, each of which had an engine room and a driving cab of its own. The design was created to haul exceptionally heavy trains on lines without overhead wiring; after the war the surviving machines went on serving in ordinary traffic. Its characteristic features are the long body with cooling louvers along the sides and cabs at both ends of the unit.
Build and sand the large areas of the body in stages and fill the joints while they are still accessible - once both halves are glued together you cannot reach them. Leave the bogies and the running gear separate and paint them on their own, and only then fit them. On a large area an airbrush pays off: an even base and a slightly lighter cast in the middle of the surfaces optically take weight off the model. Build the weathering up from fine washes in the pressings through rust shades on the running gear to dust pigments along the lower edge.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
