About product

Width indicators of German vehicles 1:35 - a set of four metal parts

A metal accessory from the manufacturer Master. Although it is listed among turned barrels and parts, it is not a weapon: according to its name the set holds four turned width indicators, that is the thin rods that German vehicles carried on their front fenders. It is not a kit but a detail to complete a finished model in 1:35 scale.

A detail that a model usually lacks

Width indicators are among the parts that kits either leave out or settle with a molded-over lump. And when a plastic part is in the box after all, it is the most fragile piece of the whole model: it breaks off when taken from the sprue, during masking and while carrying the finished work. A turned metal part has the same silhouette but survives being touched. It is exactly these small things that make the difference on a finished model between a coarse and a fine build, because they sit at the edge of what can be molded in plastic at all.

The real subject

German armored and half-track vehicles carried rod width indicators on their front fenders. They helped the driver judge the real width of the machine, which was useful in narrow streets, in the field and when driving in poor visibility. According to its name the set covers a wide group of Sd.Kfz. types, from light armored cars to half-track transport vehicles.

Fitting and painting

A hole is drilled in the fender at the position of the indicator to suit the shank of the part and the depth is checked dry, as the part has to stand perpendicular; otherwise a crooked indicator draws more attention than the detail itself. It is glued with a small drop of gel super glue or with epoxy, which still allows the angle to be corrected. Degrease the metal with alcohol and go over it with a metal primer. It is best to fit the parts only after the vehicle has been base painted and weathered, because masking tape otherwise pulls them out easily.

Who the set is for

  • For builders of German armored and half-track vehicles in 1:35 scale
  • For modelers whose plastic indicators break again and again
  • For models meant to be carried and displayed often
  • For the finishing stage of a build alongside photo-etched parts

This is an accessory for building the model, not a standalone kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

According to its name the set holds four pieces.

The rods on the front fenders helped the driver judge the real width of the machine in tight spots and in poor visibility.

Best only after base spraying and weathering. Fitted earlier, masking tape or a cloth pulls them out of the fender easily.

No. Although they are listed in the category of turned barrels and parts, these are width indicators for the fenders, not armament.
