A turned replacement barrel of 8.8 cm caliber with a length of 71 calibers for a model of the German tank destroyer Jagdpanther in 1:35 scale, cut for the Academy kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The barrel is the part on which a plastic kit loses the most. A long injection-molded tube carries a lengthwise seam along its whole length that has to be sanded away, and after sanding the cross section tends to be oval instead of round and the muzzle has to be laboriously drilled out. A turned part comes with a perfectly round cross section and a finished muzzle, so the most delicate sanding of the whole build falls away. On a barrel 71 calibers long that difference is visible from every angle. According to the name the part is cut for a kit from the brand Academy.
The Jagdpanther was a German tank destroyer built on the chassis of the Panther tank. It carried an anti-tank gun of 8.8 cm caliber with a barrel 71 calibers long, that is the 8.8 cm PaK 43/3 L/71, and on late examples the PaK 43/4. The figure L/71 states the length of the barrel in multiples of the caliber, not the caliber itself. A weapon of the same caliber and length was carried by other German vehicles too, but always in a different mounting and under a different designation: the PaK 43/2, that is the StuK 43/1, belongs to the Ferdinand and Elefant tank destroyers, whereas the PaK 43/1 was the gun of the Nashorn vehicle. In choosing a barrel, therefore, what decides is the pair of vehicle and weapon designation, not the caliber alone.
A replacement barrel is supplied. The kit, paints and glue are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
