A resin accessory set from the manufacturer DEF Model that replaces the gun of the American light tank M3 Stuart in the form with a canvas cover over the mantlet. Canvas is an ideal subject for cast resin and the worst possible one for injection-molded plastic: the folds of the fabric have undercut shapes that a mold cannot hold, so the plastic version tends to be soft and flat. A casting can hold crisp creases, the sag and the way the cloth follows the shape beneath it. The set is an accessory; the kit of the tank you need to have of your own.
The M3 Stuart was an American light tank of the Second World War, used by American and British units and supplied to the Allies. Its main armament was a gun of 37 mm caliber. Around the barrel and the mantlet, tanks commonly used a canvas cover, which closed the gap between the moving and the fixed part and kept dust, rain and mud out of the fighting compartment. In photographs of the period the cover is often dusty, dirty and sagging differently from the surrounding plates, so on a model it pays to paint it separately.
First wash the resin parts in lukewarm soapy water, so that the mold release from the mold comes off the surface, because otherwise neither paint nor primer will hold. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine saw as close to the part as you can, level the rest with abrasive paper used wet and always with protection for your airways, because resin dust must not be breathed in. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue; solvent cement for plastic will not join resin. Apply a thin coat of primer before painting. Mix the canvas a shade warmer and lighter than the metal surfaces, let a dark wash run into the folds and go over the crests of the creases with a dry brush, because it is exactly that contrast that turns a casting into fabric.
