Cut birch boughs tied to the armor are one of the most typical images of a summer campaign. The crew broke them off in the first grove by the road, tucked them behind the grab handles and within a few hours they dried out. This greenery makes exactly that view possible: a machine trying to disappear into the landscape, and leaves that help it only for a while.
Camouflaging with branches has its rules on a model. The boughs never cover the whole surface evenly but hold wherever there is something to catch on: behind the lifting eyes, behind the tools, under ropes and around the turret. Horizontal surfaces are covered more densely than vertical ones, and the front areas around the driver's field of view stay clear, because he has to see through there.
What fresh and what wilting greenery looks like: on the first day the leaves are upright and rich, on the second they soften and the color goes yellow. Alternating the two states on one machine is the detail that tells of the time elapsed since the last move.
Working with the material: for camouflage the leaves are not sprinkled loose but glued onto thin twigs, which only then go onto the model. Dried rootlets or seafoam work well. The finished boughs are attached with a drop of glue and, for safety, drawn over with fine wire, which at the same time represents a rope.
The same material will also serve an ordinary summer grove, where birch forms the light undergrowth among conifers. In that case it suits to sprinkle more densely and to keep the color fresh, because trees in a stand are not exposed to dust from a road. The difference between a dusty avenue and a clean grove costs only a few strokes of a brush.
