The Fast Guide edition from the publisher Komakai heads for the circuits this time, with the Audi R10 TDI endurance prototype as its subject. The customer gets a printed publication, not a box with a model.
The R10 is the prototype with which the brand first put a diesel engine into long-distance racing. The V12 with a pair of turbochargers behaved entirely unlike its gasoline rivals, with a muted roar instead of a sharp note and enormous torque, on which the car pulled away from slow corners sooner than its opponents. The closed body with its long tail was built for fast circuits and, together with lower fuel consumption, made it possible to run longer stints between pit stops. The result was victories at Le Mans in 2006, 2007 and 2008 and a transformation of the whole class, because diesel prototypes became the measure of performance for several years. The car arrived at a time when the rules of endurance racing first opened the door to something other than gasoline power.
Prototypes of this era have many surfaces of complex shape and a great deal of machinery hidden under the body. When a model is built with the covers open or with the suspension exposed, knowing the real arrangement helps more than any instruction sheet.
