A title from the publisher Komakai in the Ultra Detail Guide series, devoted to the McLaren MP4/2C single-seater. It is a publication for modelers that keeps to one car and its racing use rather than a kit.
The MP4/2C was the final evolution of the successful MP4/2 line from the pen of the designer John Barnard. It was powered by a turbocharged six-cylinder designated TAG, developed and built at Porsche, and as with other cars of the day it was often the management of the prescribed fuel allowance that decided matters. Alain Prost and Keke Rosberg drove the 1986 season with this single-seater. Prost defended his world title only in the last race at Adelaide, where the order of the season was finally settled by a tire failure on the leading rival. For Rosberg the same race was the last start of his Formula 1 career. The British team's cooperation with the German engine shop brought consecutive drivers' titles, and the MP4/2C closed it at its peak.
Cars of the turbo era have a densely packed tail and radiators squeezed into narrow sidepods. Reference material focused on a single car helps tell the state of the car at individual races apart and keeps it from being mixed up with the older version of the same line. That pays off above all at the rear, where the extraction of hot air was solved a little differently every time.
