A title from the Ultra Detail Guide series of the publisher Komakai, devoted to the BMW R80 G/S motorcycle. It is a publication for modelers rather than a kit, and it concentrates on a single machine and its form.
The BMW R80 G/S arrived in 1980 and founded the whole class of large touring enduros. It joined an 800 cc air-cooled flat twin with long suspension travel and with a single-sided rear swingarm, which looked like a revelation at the time. The abbreviation in the designation refers to the machine's double purpose, for the road and for off-road. The motorcycle quickly made its mark in long-distance competition and in the first half of the 1980s stood behind several victories on the route from Paris to Dakar. It is exactly this reputation that made it the ancestor of the line of touring enduros the Munich brand builds to this day. The brand followed up on the success with a production version that referred to the long-distance event directly by its name.
A model of a motorcycle rests on the small things, all of which are visible once it is finished: the frame, the routing of the cables, the carburetors, the brake lines and the spoked wheels. Reference material focused on a single type saves a great deal of guessing here. With a boxer, moreover, the look is changed considerably by how the cylinders and their finning are finished, because the machine carries them in its most exposed place.
