This set of masks from Art Scale is meant for a model of the heavy bomber Consolidated B-24J Liberator in 1:48 scale. On a four-engined machine of this size there really is a great deal of glazing, and painting the frames by hand takes more time than all the rest of the painting, which is why a masking set is worth it. The item is listed as the single-sided version, and the double-sided version is a separate item. Neither plastic parts nor paints are included. The cut of the masks follows the Hobby Boss kit.
The Liberator was the most numerously produced American bomber of the Second World War. Its characteristic features are the slender Davis wing set high on the fuselage, twin vertical tails and a boxy fuselage with a roomy bomb bay. The J version was among the most widespread and carried a nose gun turret, which gave the crew cover in the forward direction as well. Besides raids over Europe, Liberators served in large numbers over the Pacific and over the Atlantic on anti-submarine patrol.
On a large bomber it pays to mask all the transparencies at once before the first coat goes on, otherwise the work is needlessly broken up. Cover the gun turrets and the side observation windows with an overlap, because that is where the paint most often gets inside. Before the final shade it is worth evening the whole airframe out with a base coat, so that filled seams are invisible under the paint.
