About product

Omask 1:48 Tempest Mk.II, landing gear bay plugs (for Eduard)

This is a masking accessory, not a model. The package holds no aircraft parts: you have to own the Hawker Tempest Mk.II kit from Eduard in 1:48 scale. The plugs are of springy foam and are shaped to the landing gear bays of that kit.

Note: Mk.II, not Mk.V

This is a crucial distinction with the Tempest and it is worth pausing over. The Tempest Mk.II had a Bristol Centaurus radial engine, that is, a blunt, circular nose. The Tempest Mk.V, by contrast, had a Napier Sabre H-block engine with a slim nose and the radiator in the leading edge of the wing. The two machines look markedly different, have different kits and differently shaped landing gear bays. This set of plugs is for the Mk.II. If you are building the Mk.V, you need a different set.

What the plugs are for

A modeler paints the landing gear bay as one of the first things, as it is a deep cavity and a fair piece of work goes into it. But as soon as it is time to spray the outside, paint threatens to fly into it. Masking an irregular cavity with tape and cotton is a nuisance and still does not seal. A plug is a shaped part that fits the bay exactly and seals it: it goes in, the model is sprayed and once dry it comes out. The foam compresses slightly, so it also seats against a busy edge. A plug also protects the bay while sanding and from dust.

The real subject

The Hawker Tempest is a British fighter of the end of the Second World War, developed from the Typhoon type, and it excelled in speed at low altitude. The Mk.II version differs from the others precisely in its powerplant: it received the massive eighteen-cylinder Bristol Centaurus radial, which gave it a characteristically stubby nose. The development of that engine dragged on, however, so the Mk.II practically never reached the fighting in Europe and saw service only after the war.

Who the set is for

  • For builders of the Tempest Mk.II kit from Eduard in 1:48 scale
  • For modelers who spray with an airbrush and want a clean edge to the bay
  • For those who want to avoid fiddly masking with tape and cotton
  • For builders who sand their model and need to keep the bay free of dust

This is not a model. The set holds no kit, no paints and no glue.

No. This set is shaped to the bays of the Mk.II kit. For the Mk.V a different set of plugs is needed.

Of springy foam. It compresses in the bay, conforms to the edge and seals it with no tape and no gluing.
