About product

1:48 Vietnam War Aces R.S. Ritchie - a resin figure of a pilot

A resin figure of a pilot in 1:48 scale. It is not an aircraft kit but an accessory that is added to a finished model. The casting is conceived as a particular named person, not as an anonymous crew member: both the face and the stance are modeled on one man, so the figure stands up to a close look and belongs in the foreground of a display case rather than in the middle of a group.

Placing it in the scene

A standing figure in 1:48 scale comes out at roughly three and a half centimeters. Beside a sizeable twin-engine fighter it looks small, and that is precisely its point, because from it the viewer immediately reads off how high the fuselage is, where the leading edge of the wing ends and how high the cockpit sits. It works best off the longitudinal axis of the model, a little to one side of the nose gear leg or at the wing tip, so that the outline of the aircraft does not swallow it. On a bare board with no other props it needs free space around it; in a denser diorama, by contrast, set it next to something low so that it does not hang in the air.

Cleaning up and painting

The casting is held on a casting block, usually under the soles or behind the back. Cut the block off with a fine-toothed saw rather than with nippers, as resin tears when nipped. Sand the remainder down flush and go over the parting line from the mold with a scalpel drawn flat. Before painting, wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent so that residues of the release agent disappear, otherwise the paint will not hold. Then follows a thin layer of primer, then the base tones and lastly the face and hands. Glue any separate parts with cyanoacrylate glue, and sand wet and with respiratory protection.

Who the figure is for

  • modelers who add a human scale to aircraft models in 1:48
  • builders of small display case scenes and vignettes
  • anyone interested in portrait figures of particular people
  • more advanced modelers used to working with resin

The figure is supplied unpainted, as a resin casting. Paints, glue and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a stand-alone figure of a pilot, an accessory for a finished aircraft model in 1:48 scale.

The exact contents of the package are stated on the box. The name describes one figure of a pilot.

It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, that is super glue. Before painting it is degreased with water and detergent, then a thin primer is applied and only on that the paints.

Working with resin is more demanding than with plastic because of cutting off the casting block and sanding. A patient beginner will manage it, but it suits modelers with practice rather more.
