A set of templates for spraying the Japanese national insignia onto the Nakajima Ki-43-II Hayabusa fighter in 1:72 scale. The hinomaru disc comes about in paint, not as an applied film.
Army fighters carried the discs on both sides of the fuselage and on the wings above and below. That is six areas that have to have the same diameter and the same shade, and yet each of them is sprayed at a different angle. That is exactly why a shaped template pays off on the insignia: the dimension is set once and for all and it does not matter which disc you are doing.
The Ki-43 was a light, agile and exceptionally widespread machine of the Japanese Army Air Force; the Allied designation was Oscar. The Ki-43-II version brought higher performance, better protection for the pilot and a revised wing. The machines served from Burma to New Guinea and their finishes ranged from bare metal through light gray-green coatings to the dark green of the mottled late machines.
The base has to be smooth and matured, otherwise paint will creep under. Put an opaque white under the red, especially on a dark green airframe. Spray lightly and at right angles, in several passes. After lifting the templates, let the insignia dry to the touch and only then give the model a matte or semi-gloss clear coat, which will tie the edge in with its surroundings.
