About product

LM-68 in 1:43 scale from AVD Models

The kit captures the LM-68 tram motor car, a type tied above all to Leningrad and to the look of transport there from the end of the 1960s. AVD Models releases it in 1:43 scale, the scale most collectors of vehicle models are used to. The vehicle is striking in shape and on a shelf works differently from a car model: the long shell with its band of windows gives a whole cabinet a different rhythm.

The real subject

The LM-68 came about at the Leningrad wagon repair works and differed from its predecessors mainly in the treatment of the shell. The large glazing, which earned the vehicle the nickname Akvarium, or aquarium, was a modern feature at the time and at the same time became its identifying mark. The vehicle kept to the proven layout of a four-axle high-floor motor car and appeared in service both singly and in pairs. An updated form later followed on from the type, based on the LM-68 but with an altered shell. For a modeler the LM-68 is interesting precisely because it is a clearly recognizable subject with a character of its own.

Building and painting tips

The extensive glazing is the main theme of the build on this type. Leave the clear parts to the end, protect them with masking tape and fix them with an adhesive meant for transparent surfaces. Assemble the shell dry before joining it for good and check that the band of windows sits without strain. Lay down a filler primer before the finish. Run the horizontal division of the colors along the trim strips and spray in thin coats, so that the edge of the mask leaves no ridge. The interior, visible through the large windows, is worth at least suggesting with a darker shade and gentle accenting of the seats. Choose the weathering in proportion: dust from below, a dulled area around the current collector and wear at the doors.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of historic trams
  • modelers building a diorama of a city of the late 1960s and 1970s
  • those interested in rail vehicles of Eastern design
  • collectors in 1:43 looking for an unconventional piece for a cabinet

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It arose from the unusually large glazed area of the shell, through which the inside of the vehicle is clearly visible from every side. It is also the most noticeable identifying mark of the type.

Yes. On this type in particular the inside is clearly visible through the large windows, so even simple accenting of the seats and the floor will help a finished model considerably.

Glue and paints, which are not in the package. In addition we recommend a filler primer, masking tape and an adhesive suitable for clear parts because of the glazing.
