A plastic model of the Douglas D-558-1 Skystreak in 1:48 scale — the American experimental research aircraft that broke the world speed record in 1947.
Responsibility details are not available.
The kit captures the American experimental research aircraft Douglas D-558-1 Skystreak in 1:48 scale. The model is supplied as an unassembled and unpainted kit; check the exact contents of the box (the number of parts, decal sheets and any photo-etched parts or masks) on the particular packaging, because it may differ between individual releases.
The Douglas D-558-1 Skystreak was a single-seat jet research aircraft with a straight wing, developed in the second half of the 1940s for the US Navy in cooperation with the research agency NACA. The aim of the program was to explore the behavior of an airframe in the transonic speed region. Three examples were built and they flew between 1947 and 1953. In August 1947 the Skystreak twice in succession pushed the world speed record to figures around 1030 km/h. Power came from a single axial-flow Allison J-35 turbojet.
Glue the parts with liquid modeling cement for plastic, sand the seams and treat them with a filling primer. The characteristic glossy scarlet red finish of the real machines comes out best applied with an airbrush over a white undercoat; smooth gloss surfaces call for careful preparation of the surface. Finish the cockpit and the nose gear bay before closing the fuselage.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
