About product

A dive bomber with fixed landing gear

The Aichi D3A1, to which the Allies gave the code name Val, was among the most successful Japanese carrier aircraft of the first year of the war in the Pacific. Its elliptical wing betrayed German inspiration and the fixed spatted landing gear looked dated, but the aircraft was agile and its crews exceptionally accurate. It was these aircraft that struck the battleships at Pearl Harbor on the morning of December 7, 1941.

The leaders of the attack waves

The sheet for 1:72 concentrates on the lead aircraft. The crew of the first was Lieutenant Commander Takashige Egusa with his observer; Egusa led the second attack wave and his aircraft carried conspicuous striping that could be seen at a distance and was meant to hold the formation together. The third scheme belongs to the aircraft of Lieutenant Commander Kakuichi Takahashi, who led the first wave and had a special finish of his own.

Stripes that could be seen at a distance

Egusa is described as having flown two different aircraft in turn, and both had unusually loud markings. A lead aircraft had to be recognized the moment the formation was forming up over the target, and conspicuous striping of the fuselage and the tail surfaces did that job better than any tactical code. For a modeler it is a rewarding subject, because such an aircraft stands out in a display case among its single-color neighbors.

What to watch out for during the build

In 1:72 the Val is small and the fuselage code markings fall close to the surface ridges. It therefore pays to paint the fuselage to a smooth gloss and to float the marking on a film of water so that it can be nudged exactly between the rows of rivets. The Japanese hinomaru, the red disc, have a rich shade in this set that shows up well on a light gray.

The sheet is sold on its own; plastic parts are not part of it.
