The continuation of the decal line for the Aichi D3A1 Val in 1:72. Three color schemes: two carrier machines from December 1941 and one aircraft from the first production batch, tested over China at the beginning of 1940.
Responsibility details are not available.
The carrier Zuikaku was the youngest unit of the force that sailed for the Hawaiian Islands in December 1941, and her crews were among the least experienced. Even so they carried out their part of the attack without losses, and the ship then accompanied the Japanese offensive for the whole of the following year. The dive bombers that took off from her carried their own code and number on the fin, by which an aircraft can be traced in the literature.
The second part of the collection offers two machines of the model 11 from the Hawaii operation; for the second of them the name of a member of the crew is given as well, Petty Officer Shisaku Yanakawa. The third scheme is quite different: it belongs to an aircraft of the first production batch, which was tested in the Chinese area at the beginning of 1940. The white seven on its tail recalls the time when the type was still gathering experience.
The trials aircraft of 1940 differs from the later carrier examples in color as well as in markings. Anyone building both gains a pair on which it is visible how quickly the Imperial Japanese Navy moved from light gray finishes to darker camouflage schemes. It is exactly this duality that makes the sheet interesting even for collectors who already have a Val built.
The ground under the markings should be smooth and glossy. In the smaller sizes it also pays to settle the motif into a drop of water and only then to slide it into place, because the carrier film is thin and wrinkles easily at a dry touch.
This is a standalone sheet with no plastic parts.
