60 cm Flak Sw-36 anti-aircraft searchlight with the Sd.Ah.51 trailer (1:48, CMK)

A short-run kit produced by direct 3D printing from resin in 1:48 scale from CMK. The set covers both the 60 cm anti-aircraft searchlight and the Sd.Ah.51 transport trailer and is intended for experienced modelers used to working with resin. The searchlight can be mounted on the trailer or displayed on its own. This is not a model of an aircraft or a vehicle but a piece of period military hardware suited to a diorama.

The real subject

The German 60 cm anti-aircraft searchlight of the Second World War served both the Luftwaffe and the ground forces for lighting up the night sky during air raids and for illuminating airfield runways. The reflector with its large mirror directed anti-aircraft batteries onto targets in the dark. After the war the Czechoslovak army also used it, under the designation Svetlomet 60N.

Building and painting tips

• First wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent — that removes print resin residue and uncured resin.
• Cut the print supports away with a sharp scalpel or a fine saw; never break them off.
• Sand the remains smooth with fine paper, ideally wet and always with respiratory protection.
• Bond with super glue (cyanoacrylate) — ordinary cement for plastic does not bond resin.
• Lay down a primer; imitate the polished surface of the reflector with a silver or chrome paint or with kitchen foil, and unify the structure with a period gray and bring it out with a wash.

Who the set is for

For advanced modelers and diorama builders interested in anti-aircraft defense and in aviation subjects. Working with resin and with the fine structure of the reflector calls for experience.

The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints and glue are not included in the package. Wear a respirator and work in a ventilated area when sanding resin.
