Pre-painted photo-etched seat belts from the Czech manufacturer Eduard for the cockpit of the Douglas A-1J Skyraider attack aircraft in 1:48 scale. It is a small change with a striking result: an empty seat gives away even an otherwise nicely built model, whereas belts draped over its edge fill the cockpit at once. The belts are etched from steel, which holds its shape once bent, so unlike soft brass etching they let you sag and wave the straps faithfully. The parts are pre-painted and need no painting. This is not an aircraft model but an accessory for a kit. For the same machine Eduard also makes further accessories, from masks through full photo-etched sets to printed parts; the extent is decided by the designation of the line on the particular product.
The Douglas A-1 Skyraider was a single-engine carrier-borne attack aircraft with a piston radial engine, which came about at the end of the Second World War and went on serving well into the jet era. It was valued above all for its large load of external stores and for its ability to stay over the battlefield for a long time, which marked it out for direct support of ground troops and for escorting rescue helicopters. The A-1J version was among the late single-seat variants. The cockpit is fairly roomy compared with fighters, so the seat and its straps are well visible in it.
Separate the belts with a sharp knife on a hard surface and pick them up with tweezers, because a sweaty fingerprint shows on a pre-painted surface. Bend the buckles carefully; steel takes more than brass, but the small parts stay fragile. Let the straps wave and drape over the edge of the seat rather than stretch straight across it. Glue with cyanoacrylate laid on with the tip of a wire, so that it does not soak through to the face side. Do not spray over the parts, because the printing needs no paint; a light dry brush on the edges of the buckles is enough to lift them. Fit them before the fuselage is closed up, while the cockpit is still reachable.
This is an accessory to a plastic kit. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
