MASTER 1:48 A-4 Skyhawk - bent refueling probe boom is a turned metal part for the A-4M/N, OA-4M and late A-4E/F and TA-4F/J versions.
Responsibility details are not available.
A turned metal refueling probe boom in the bent form for models of the Skyhawk in 1:48 scale. According to the name this form was used on the A-4M and A-4N versions, on the OA-4M and on late A-4E and A-4F machines and on the two-seat TA-4F and TA-4J. It is not a kit but a single replacement part.
The bent boom is not a straight rod: it has a kink beyond which it continues at a different angle. That kink is exactly where the plastic part runs into trouble. Injection-molded plastic thins out at the bend, the mold seam runs straight across it, and the angle shifts easily during cleanup. Turned metal holds the angle set in manufacture and stays straight and smooth along its whole length. On the model it shows above all from the front and from above, where a deviation of the boom is easiest to see.
Cut the plastic boom off at the root and drill the hole in the nose to match the diameter of the shank. Before gluing, dry-fit to establish the plane in which the kink lies and mark the orientation on the shank with a fine marker; once the glue is on there is no time to look for it. Bond with cyanoacrylate glue, ideally a thin one that flows in by capillary action. The metal surface is smooth and paint will not hold on it without preparation, so degrease it and prime it with a metal primer. An interesting alternative to painting is an oxidizing agent or a bluing solution, which darkens the metal chemically and adds no thickness. When cleaning the finished model, do not run a brush against the direction of the kink.
This is an accessory for a kit, not a complete model. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
