About product

A-4 Skyhawk - pitot tube on the vertical tail, 1:48 (MASTER)

This item is not a kit: it is a detail accessory for a model you already have. MASTER makes turned metal parts, and this pitot tube is turned from brass. It replaces the plastic part molded in the kit. A pitot tube serves to measure airspeed: it senses the ram pressure of the air, from which the onboard instruments calculate the speed.

Watch the version, and read this before you order: this is the tube mounted on the vertical tail, which according to the manufacturer was carried only by selected versions, for example the A-4M, OA-4M and TA-4J. Earlier versions of the Skyhawk had the sensor arranged differently, so this part is not a universal replacement for every A-4. Check which version you are building.

Why metal instead of plastic

The metal tube is genuinely thin and has a real open bore, whereas the plastic part tends to be blunt and closed off. Metal also does not bend or break the way thin resin does and keeps a sharp shape even at tiny dimensions. On a projecting pitot tube this is crucial: it is one of the most exposed parts of a model and the one that breaks most often in handling.

Usage and painting tips

Metal cannot be bonded with polystyrene (liquid) cement: use super glue (cyanoacrylate) or epoxy. Before painting, degrease the part (spirit, isopropyl alcohol) and apply a primer, otherwise paint holds badly on smooth metal and flakes off. We recommend fitting the part right at the end of the build, so that it gets knocked as little as possible. The A-4 Skyhawk was an American light carrier-borne attack aircraft famous for its small size and simplicity: its wing did not have to fold, because the aircraft fitted into the ship's elevator as it was.

Who the part is for

  • Builders of the A-4 Skyhawk in 1:48 scale, of the versions with the tube on the tail
  • Modelers whose thin projecting plastic part keeps breaking
  • Those who want a realistic open bore instead of blunt plastic
  • More experienced modelers who can work with metal, primer and super glue

This is a detail accessory for modelers, not a kit. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. It is a single replacement detail part, a turned metal pitot tube. You have to get the A-4 Skyhawk model separately.

It will not. According to the manufacturer the part is intended for the tube on the vertical tail, which only selected versions carried, for example the A-4M, OA-4M and TA-4J. Check which version you are building before you buy.

Polystyrene cement does not work on metal, so use super glue or epoxy. Degrease the part before painting and apply a primer, otherwise paint will not hold on smooth metal.

It measures airspeed: it senses the ram pressure of the oncoming air, from which the onboard instruments derive the speed.
