About product

Insignia and markings for the A-4M

The item deals with the markings, not with the cockpit. The stencils define the shape of the national insignia and of the additional markings on the fuselage and the wings of the A-4M version in forty-eighth scale, and the insignia are then laid on in paint. Compared with decals, the work with softeners falls away, and above all you do not have to solve how to get a flat shape across a rounded spine or across a raised panel without it creasing. The kit for which the set is prepared is named in the name.

Finishes and markings during the service life

Over their service the machines of the Marine Corps went through a marked change of finishes. The original combination of a light underside and a gray upper surface with colorful insignia and conspicuous squadron markings gradually gave way to all-gray tactical schemes, in which the markings were toned down to barely perceptible shades. With late Skyhawks the same machine may therefore differ in two photographs so much that a layman will not even realize it is the same type. It is a good idea to go through the references for the scheme you have chosen beforehand.

How to go about low-contrast insignia

When the shade of an insignia is close to the shade of the base, every irregularity stands out twice as much. It pays to polish the surface with a very fine abrasive before spraying and to lay the insignia on in a really thin coat, so that no palpable edge appears once the stencil is taken off. Dry slowly; if paint that has not set is torn away, the edge frays and putting it right is then more laborious than the whole spraying.

Who it will make the work easier for

  • Builders of late Skyhawks in tactical gray finishes
  • Those who have had a bad experience with decals across raised panels
  • Modelers who weather and do not want to lose the markings
  • Those interested in Marine Corps aviation in forty-eighth scale

FAQ

No. According to the name it is aimed at the national insignia and markings. The glazing is dealt with by a separate item for the same aircraft.

Yes, it is precisely with low-contrast finishes that sprayed insignia pay off most, because they have no glossy edge to give them away.

Yes. The insignia are part of the finish, so they stand the same treatment as the surrounding area, including fine abrasion.
