Masking film for the cockpit glazing of the Grumman A-6E Intruder carrier attack aircraft, 1:48 scale. It comes in two pieces: one covers the framing as seen from outside, the other closes the panes from the inner side. Cut to the mold by the brand Hobby Boss. The package holds no insignia and no decals.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Intruder never won a beauty contest, but it could do something almost nobody could in the 1960s: reach a target at night and in cloud, find it and hit it. That was made possible by a system called DIANE, which linked a search and track radar with a ballistic computer. The crew consisted of a pilot and a bombardier/navigator sitting side by side, with the navigator's seat a little lower and further back so as not to block the pilot's view when landing on a deck. The E version brought better electronics and later a nose sensor for guidance onto laser-designated targets. The aircraft served over Vietnam, in Lebanon and in Operation Desert Storm, and it disappeared from US Navy decks only in 1997.
Because the crew sits side by side, the canopy of the Intruder is unusually broad and on a finished model it can be seen into. That raises the value of the inner template: it covers the panes at the moment the frame is sprayed from the inner side, so that after completion no tape and no modeling putty shows through anywhere. The outer film then takes care of the sharp boundary between metal and glass during the final coat of gray naval camouflage. Both are lifted at once, ideally warmed slightly with hot air so that the adhesive lets go without pulling at the frame.
