Glazing covering for the Japanese A5M carrier fighter in its first two forms, 1:48 scale. The film allows for the outer and the inner surface and is shaped to the molding by the brand Fine Molds.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Mitsubishi A5M was the first monoplane fighter in the world to settle regularly on the deck of an aircraft carrier. Its designer Jiro Horikoshi gave it a slender wing, fixed landing gear in aerodynamic fairings and above all an obsession with low weight, which later showed in full on his more famous successor. From 1937 over China it demonstrated what agility can do, and Allied intelligence assigned it a code name beginning with the letter C.
Most machines of this family flew with an open cockpit protected only by a low windscreen. An enclosed cockpit was tried on one sub-version, but the pilots rejected it and the units went back to the original arrangement. The masked area is therefore small, but it is all the harder to trim with tape, because the windscreen is curved in two directions at once.
The set brings shapes for the outside and for the corresponding surfaces on the inner side. Even on a small windscreen the inner covering makes sense, as the frame on an open cockpit is seen close up and cannot be hidden. The outlines match the clear parts of the chosen model.
On such small areas it pays to lower the pressure on the airbrush and to come in closer. A strong stream of air lifts a small piece of film and, before you notice, there is paint under it. When the work is done, let the model rest and only then take the covering off with the tip of a toothpick.
