Stencils for spraying the Japanese national roundels on a model of the A6M2 fighter from the attack on Pearl Harbor, 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Mitsubishi A6M2 Type 21 was at that moment the finest carrier fighter in the world. A light airframe, an enormous range and an agility its Western opponents were not prepared for. That morning, aircraft from the decks of six carriers circled over Hawaii, and the code signal Tora Tora Tora meant that the surprise had come off. This set of stencils is tied to exactly that group of aircraft and to their national markings.
The hinomaru is a plain red disc, and that is precisely what makes it unforgiving: every departure from a true circle shows, and a soft decal never settles entirely without creases on the leading edge of a wing. A cut stencil holds its shape even over a curve and the paint lands exactly where it belongs.
Of all colors, red covers worst. So spray a thin white or light gray underlay into the masked area first, let it dry and only then lay the final shade on top. You will save several coats and the marking will not thicken into a relief that would look coarse at this scale. Remove the film while the paint has only flashed off.
On this type the national markings appeared on the upper and lower surfaces of the wing and on the sides of the fuselage, and the individual diameters differed from one another. Before spraying, lay the sheets out beside the model and assign each circle to the place it belongs to; working that out afterwards is hard. Keep the leftover pieces from the sheet, as they will serve for repairs should one of the discs come out lopsided.
