Cut self-adhesive masks for spraying the national insignia and lettering on the Japanese A6M2 Zero carrier fighter, Type 21 version, in 1:48 scale. The markings come out right in the paint, with no carrier film.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Zero in the Type 21 version was the carrier form of the fighter, with folding wingtips that let the aircraft fit the elevators of Japanese carriers. These were the aircraft that led the first wave over Pearl Harbor and escorted raids as far as the Indian Ocean. A model in 1:48 scale therefore nearly always carries the markings of one of the carrier groups.
The package brings cut self-adhesive pieces for spraying the markings: the roundels on the wings and fuselage, the tail codes and the stripes. The film is pliable, follows the curve of the fuselage and leaves no adhesive on the paint when lifted.
A sprayed marking has no carrier film, so on a flat surface it makes no glossy outline and does not lift over rivets or panel lines. The paint lies in the same layer as the camouflage around it, which helps later when the engraving is picked out and the model weathered. The procedure is straightforward: let the base coat cure completely, lay the piece down to the register marks, press the edges home with a toothpick and spray thinly in several passes.
Paints and the kit have to be obtained separately, as the package holds the cut film alone. When building a carrier aircraft it pays to find a photograph of the particular machine, because the layout of the codes differed from deck to deck and on a model that difference is immediately plain.
