About product

An advertising figure on the nose of a night bomber

The set brings the markings of a Lancaster B.I with the fuselage code WS-J as a machine of No. 9 Squadron RAF from Bardney in Lincolnshire carried them in 1944. On the left side of the nose it had a striding figure painted, taken from an advertisement of the period for Scotch whisky, completed with a slogan that can be freely rendered as still going strong. Borrowings like these from the press and from posters belonged to the decoration of bombers quite ordinarily, because with them the crews set their aircraft apart from dozens of others on the same field.

No. 9 Squadron was among the oldest bomber units of British aviation and at the end of the war it concentrated on attacks with bombs of exceptional caliber. Together with No. 617 Squadron it took part in operations against the battleship Tirpitz off the Norwegian coast. Meanwhile the ordinary night work over the Ruhr and over German cities went on, from which the crews came back with their covering shot through, or else not at all.

Bardney lay in the middle of a belt of stations from which several hundred four engine machines a day took off for night raids in the last two years of the war. The ground crews there worked in shifts under the open sky and refueling and loading bombs and ammunition into the turrets took up most of the day. A model built in these markings therefore looks good on a diorama with a bomb train trolley or with a ladder at the rear turret.

How to work the sheet

Cut the motifs out as close around the printing as possible. The narrower the strip of carrier film left around a picture, the less it will show once dry. Settle the large nose artwork in one attempt, because it can be moved over the surface only until it starts to set. Under the lettering on the camouflaged spine it pays to smooth the surface beforehand; that is where the joints of the covering tend to be most pronounced. The package holds only the decal sheet; the kit and paints have to be bought separately.

FAQ

It was a way for a crew to make a machine their own when it otherwise looked the same as all the others. The motifs were taken from advertisements, from comics and from film posters, and marks for raids carried out often accumulated alongside them.

Yes, the model itself, paints and gloss varnish under the decals. A decal softener is useful too, because artwork across the joints of the covering settles less well without it.

Around ten seconds in lukewarm water and then left to rest on a support for a while. The picture should be movable off the paper under light pressure rather than floating free; otherwise it has been in the water too long.

Older sheets sometimes grow brittle and crack when soaked. Going over a motif with a thin coat of clear varnish, which strengthens the film, and only then soaking it will help.
