A decal sheet from the manufacturer Kits-World with American national markings in the form with a red outline, prepared for models of the Boeing B-17F and B-17G bombers in 1:48 scale. It is not the scheme of a particular machine but a set of national insignia in the appropriate sizes for the wings and the sides of the fuselage. How many pieces and in what dimensions the sheet contains can be told from the illustration on the packaging.
American aviation national markings went through several changes during the Second World War. The form with a star in a circle supplemented by rectangular fields at the sides and with an outline in red was in force only for a short time in 1943, before the red outline was replaced by a blue one. Machines carrying this variant are therefore narrowly datable, and modelers seek them out for exactly that reason. On the B-17 the insignia was applied to the upper surface of the left wing, the lower surface of the right wing and both sides of the rear fuselage.
These insignia are among the largest decals on a model and their position is conspicuous: a wrongly placed or rotated marking catches the eye before the whole rest of the build. Before applying them, therefore, measure the position against the panel lines and mark the edges with narrow masking tape, which you remove once the decal is seated. Apply the marking onto a well dried gloss surface, seat the decal wet and watch that the rows of fields stay parallel with the axis of the fuselage rather than with a random line of the skin. Blot the excess water off so that the design does not rotate.
