A masking set for a model of the American B-17G heavy bomber in 1:48 scale. The die-cut masks are stuck onto the glazing before spraying.
Responsibility details are not available.
The B-17G is the last and most numerous production version of the American four-engine Flying Fortress heavy bomber. You will recognize it at first glance by the gun turret slung under the nose, which the earlier versions did not have and which was meant to help the machine against head-on attacks by fighters. It was built in large numbers, and in 1:48 scale it is an impressively large model on which every inaccuracy shows.
The bomber has more glazed areas than almost any other aircraft of its day: the glazed nose, the pilots' cockpit, the side windows and the transparencies of the gun positions. Cutting that many frames out of tape by hand takes hours, and one slip of the knife is enough for the work to show. The ready-made masks are cut exactly to the parts of the kit, so measuring and cutting are avoided and the frames come out the same width on both sides of the model.
The masks are stuck onto a clean, dry, degreased surface, and always before spraying. Lift them off the sheet with tweezers, seat them precisely in place and press the edges down properly with a toothpick or a blunt point so that paint cannot creep under them. Spray in thin coats; one thick coat forms a ridge along the mask that will still be visible once it is taken off. Take the mask off soon after the paint has dried, with a pull at an angle to the side. Work carefully on clear parts so that they are not scratched.
The set is an accessory for a plastic kit in 1:48 scale. The paints, the glue and the thinner are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
