A decal sheet for two Marauders with nose art, the first part of a series devoted to the fighting over Europe. Scale 1:48.
Responsibility details are not available.
Because of its small wing area and high landing speed the Martin B-26 earned unflattering nicknames at the training bases, yet in combat it ended the war with the lowest loss rate among the bombers of the Ninth Air Force. Its crews attacked bridges, marshalling yards and missile launching sites from low and medium altitudes.
There are two machines on the sheet. The first is a B-26B-50, serial number 42-95903, of the 495th Bomb Squadron of the 344th Bomb Group, which in July 1944 flew from Stansted in England and carried the inscription Wine, Women and Song on its nose. The second, a B-26B-45 with the number 42-95752, belonged to the 442nd Bomb Squadron of the 320th Bomb Group of the Twelfth Air Force and in August of the same year operated from Decimomannu on Sardinia under the name Hard To Get.
The units in England gradually moved to airfields in France during 1944, while the units deployed from Sardinia flew against targets in northern Italy and in the south of France. The pair on the sheet therefore shows one type in two different theaters, with differently applied recognition stripes and with a different degree of paint wear.
The decals are transferred onto a smooth gloss coat, which prevents the edges from going dull. Soak the cut-out motif for a few seconds, let it rest on a paper towel and only then slide it into place. A decal softener helps it wrap around riveted seams and panel lines, and once dry the surface is sealed with a matte or semi-gloss coat.
This part of the series covers the pair of machines described above; the other schemes are issued separately.
