A 1:48 sheet for two B-26 bombers of the 394th Group: the machine with the code 4T-L and the aircraft K5-B, both with a personal name on the fuselage.
Responsibility details are not available.
Both subjects come from one bombardment group but from two of its squadrons. The first machine, with the number 42-96099, the code 4T-L and the name Slow Starter, flew with the 585th Squadron; the second, with the number 42-96026 and the code K5-B, with the 584th Squadron and bore the name Victory Read. The unit operated within the tactical air arm over western Europe and specialized in precise strikes from medium altitude.
Medium bombers did not operate in giant formations like the four engine machines. They flew in formations of sixteen to eighteen, dropped from a height of around three and a half thousand meters and their task was point targets: bridge spans, crossroads, fuel depots. That work in particular called for holding formation to within meters, because the whole group dropped at once on the lead aircraft.
The motifs are printed on a common film, so the edge of the cut determines where the border will run on a model. Leave the scissors aside and rather use a fresh scalpel with a guiding straightedge, and for rounded lettering a cutter with a small circular blade. The closer to the artwork the cut runs, the less the border will show once dry.
By the close of 1944 the aircraft of these groups tended to be well worn, with faded olive areas and fresh patches from shrapnel. Personal lettering stayed legible, because the mechanics renewed it, whereas the technical markings beneath it were the first to disappear.
