A decal sheet from the manufacturer Xtradecal in 1:48 scale focused on the two-seat training versions of the British Lightning interceptor, that is the T.4 and T.5 variants. The sheet is a standalone accessory: it contains markings and instructions, and the plastic model, the paints and the glue are not part of it.
The Lightning was a British supersonic interceptor with an unusual arrangement of its powerplant: two Rolls-Royce Avon engines were mounted one above the other in the fuselage, and the forward part of the airframe was taken up by a circular air intake with a central cone. The wing had a markedly swept layout with an almost straight leading edge. The T.4 and T.5 training versions were given a widened forward fuselage with two seats side by side; the T.4 grew out of the single-seat F.2 version and the T.5 out of the F.3. The trainers were fully combat-capable and served with operational units as well.
The Lightning has a fuselage of markedly circular section, and a flat decal simply cannot be laid on extensive markings there: wrinkling forms at the edges. The answer is a softener: once the decal is set and the water blotted away, lay a thin coat on with a soft brush and then do not touch it. The film softens, creases for a while and looks ruined, but as it dries it tightens into shape by itself. Intervening at this stage will tear the decal. If bubbles are left once it is dry, prick them with the tip of a scalpel and apply the softener once more.
